Proverbs 9:10-12 — Fear + Knowledge + God = ???

READ THIS: Proverbs 9:10-12

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 11 For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. 12 If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

We have learned A LOT about wisdom, haven’t we? It’s certainly the main focus of Proverbs… but how do we actually grow in wisdom? Where do we even start? Luckily for us, these verses teach us the first two steps of our path toward wisdom: fear of the Lord and knowledge of the Lord!

The first step is to… fear God? Not exactly… Fear of the Lord looks different depending on whether or not you believe in God. For the unbeliever, fear of the Lord is fearing judgement from God, but for the believer, fear of the Lord is acknowledging that God is more powerful, more in control, and wiser than you are!

The second step is to know God. That may sound easy, but the truth is that knowing God is a lifelong journey! Part of having wisdom is recognizing that we will never fully know who God is until we are in heaven with Him forever. So how can we get to know God? The same way we get to know anyone: spend time with Him and people who know Him (community), talk with Him (prayer), and learn about Him (the Word)! If we can grow in fear of the Lord and knowledge of the Lord, we will also grow in wisdom.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Would you say you fear God? Why or why not?

2. What helps you learn more about God? Is that something you can be doing more often?

TRY THIS:

Today, we are gonna try and do something a little different: breath prayer! Take the next minute or two to take deep breaths and pray at the same time. When you breathe in, think “You are God,” and when you breathe out, think “and I am not.” Use this time to remember that God is above us and in control, but also that He is for us!
