Proverbs 8:22-31 — Our Wise Creator

READ THIS: Proverbs 8:22-31

22 “The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; 23 I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be. 24 When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; 25 before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, 26 before he made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth. 27 I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, 28 when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, 29 when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. 30 Then I was constantly at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, 31 rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

The first words of the Bible are found in Genesis 1:1-2 — “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” In the Gospel of John, we learn that Jesus, described as the Word, was also with God from the very beginning (John 1:1-2). From the beginning of time, long before all of creation, God, Jesus, and the Spirit were around… but now we are learning about a 4th person? Huh? Not quite!

Remember, Solomon loves to describe wisdom as a person, but wisdom wasn’t actually a person that was walking around and talking. What Solomon is trying to explain here is that wisdom has been around since the beginning of time because God used wisdom when He created the world. Look around the room you’re in right now. Look outside your window! God’s creation is wonderful, complex, and made entirely by His wisdom! God doesn’t make rash mistakes like we do! He thinks about every decision He makes, and He creates everything the way He needs them to be. Now think about this… YOU are a part of that wise and beautiful creation. God made you exactly the way He intended, even when you don’t think so!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Think about the most unique or quirky things about yourself… have you ever thought about the fact that God made you that way intentionally and for a reason?

2. Do you think that every decision God makes is wise? Why or why not?

TRY THIS:

Look at all the creation around you today, from the trees to the sky to the people around you, and remind yourself that everything God made was intentional! Treat people around you (and treat yourself) like God made them intentionally!
