Proverbs 7:21-27 — Caught in the Snare

READ THIS: Proverbs 7:21-27

21 With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. 22 All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose 23 till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life. 24 Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. 25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths. 26 Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng. 27 Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

We have finally reached the climax of the story Solomon has been sharing. The foolish man has fully given into the temptation of the woman, and now he has to pay the price. Satan will use whatever tools he has in order to get us to sin.. and his main tool is persuasion. Throughout history we can see Satan using persuasion to tempt humans into sinning. People who fall for temptations are just like animals getting trapped in a snare. Solomon uses the example of animals being trapped (then slaughtered) to help get his point across. Once we commit sin, the only way to be clean of it is through death.

However, Solomon gives some words of advice. If we choose to be obedient to God, then we have nothing to worry about. He gives us the strength to resist temptations. Many people fall into the temptations of our world, but those who find their power in God will not suffer the consequences of sin. We must always be aware of the things that tempt us to sin and make sure we turn away from them and towards God.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. When was a time you felt trapped and the only way to get out was to sin?

2. What are ways you can turn toward God when feeling the temptation to sin?

TRY THIS:

Next time you feel tempted to sin, try talking to God before making any decisions. It may surprise you just how much talking to Him can help you turn away from temptations.
