Proverbs 6:20-22 — Bind it on your heart

READ THIS: Proverbs 6:20-22

20 My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. 21 Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Let's get sad for a moment together...a sad thing about this life is that people die. Most people reading this still have one parent, and a lot have two. But, one day those parents will go on to be with Jesus, and we won't be able to call them and ask for advice. Some people reading this are experiencing this right now. That is sad and hard. BUT, something that every one reading this can have is memories of their parents, or memories of people who were/are like parents to them. Those memories can still help guide us today. However, it is a lot easier to remember the advice of our parents/mentors/guardians when they are gone if we intentionally commit their advice to memory now! Then, even when they are far away or with Jesus, we can still be guided by their advice!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What is a piece of advice from one of your parents or parent figures that stand out in your mind?

2. Why is it important to remember the advice of our parents/parent figures? How is advice from someone like that different from a friend's advice?

TRY THIS:

If possible, try to share that piece of advice you named in the first question with someone else. Speaking out loud helps us to memorize things! (Or, in other words, to bind it on our hearts!)
