Proverbs 5:15-20 — Let's agree to agree

READ THIS: Proverbs 5:15-20

15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. 16 Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? 17 Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. 18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. 19 A loving doe, a graceful deer — may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love. 20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Throughout the Old Testament, there are times where God compares the Israelites to adulterers, people who decide to betray their spouses and be with someone else. God says that is what the Israelites do to God when they choose other gods. It makes sense because the Israelites joined in a covenant, a weighty agreement, with God, but they abandoned it every time they chose another god.

If we aren't careful, it is easy for us to do the same thing. We can enter into agreements with people and with God and totally abandon it because we see something that we think might be better. But, the better thing is almost always keeping the agreement we have and to be content in that. When we live our lives constantly dissatisfied with what we have and constantly seeking out something better, we end up forgetting the wonderful gifts God has already given us.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. When is a time in your life where you had an agreement with someone, but you left it for something else that you thought would be better?

2. Was that above agreement something that you should have left? Why or why not? (How can you tell if God wants you to leave the agreement or not?)

TRY THIS:

Make an agreement with yourself for the day and try to keep it for the whole day. It can be something serious, like that you will only say kind words today, or it can be something silly like every time you hear the word "good" you will moo. What would it look like to keep an agreement with God?
