Proverbs 5:1-6 — The Wicked Witch?

READ THIS: Proverbs 5:1-6

1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight, 2 that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. 3 For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; 4 but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. 6 She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

We have learned a lot in Proverbs about a woman named Wisdom, but today we are learning about a new woman. This adulterous woman, or a cheater by modern day terms, is known for very different characteristics than the woman known as Wisdom. She is a smooth talker, but deadly. She lures people in toward her path, but the way she walks leads to death rather than life. Who is this woman? Remember here that Solomon is speaking to his son, and Solomon knew his son far more than we did. This woman wasn't likely a specific person in his son's life, but rather the path of immorality.

So what is immorality? It's a fancy word for wickedness or evil. If we choose to stop paying attention to wisdom and insight, we will find ourselves walking down a path of wickedness. And wickedness, as James writes, leads to only one place: death. Check out James 1:13-15 for more!

So, how do we avoid this path toward death? By following Solomon's advice! Pay attention to what is wise, listen well to wise words given to you, and make sure the words you speak preserve knowledge rather than destroy it.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What areas in your life can lead you down the path of wickedness if you aren't careful?

2. How can you grow and preserve wisdom through the way you speak and listen?

What is something that distracts you from getting time in God's Word (the ultimate place to find wisdom)? Give up whatever that thing is for the next 48 hours, and see if your time spent with God grows!
