Proverbs 4:10-17 — Antihero Communion
READ THIS: Proverbs 4:10-17
10 Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. 11 I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. 12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. 13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. 14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. 15 Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way. 16 For they cannot rest until they do evil; they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble. 17 They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
If we wanted to, we could choose to completely avoid the ways of the wicked, and it would change our lives completely. But...we don't. Instead, we choose a way of life that is harmful to us and others. Why?!
On the high school mission trip, the ladies actually read this section of verses, and we stopped on verse 17. We asked why Solomon would talk about bread and wine in that verse in a kind of weird, bad version of the communion table. Now, when Solomon was writing, communion wasn't a thing yet BUT bread and wine had always been the base of meals that people would have together. From the outside looking in, it would seem as if the people breaking bread and wine had true fellowship with one another and community, but once you get in close, you realize that the fellowship is wicked and violent, NOT encouraging and uplifting.
The way of evildoers, their path, is harsh and painful, yet we decide to walk in it anyway because we convince ourselves that it is just as good if not better than the path of righteousness.
THINK ABOUT IT:
1. Are there any popular but mean people in your life? Have you ever wished to be a part of their group? Why?
2. When was a time that you really wanted something or someone but when you got closer you realized it/he/she was NOT good at all?
TRY THIS:
At the end of the day, think about how you acted around that person for the rest of the day.
Is that how you act with unrighteous things/ways of living?
