Proverbs 2:20-22 — Walk the Way of the Right Foot

READ THIS: Proverbs 2:20-22

20 Thus you will walk in the ways of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; 22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

When a sentence starts with "thus" it is incredibly important to look at the sentence(s) before. The sentences before show that it is important to follow wisdom so that we can turn down temptation. When we can turn down temptation, we can walk in the right ways!

But then something interesting happens in verses 21-22...the way I read it, Solomon drops a mini prophecy on us. Throughout the Bible, there are times where what is written can mean multiple things at the same time. Kind of like this...imagine we are running together and I am explaining a hard situation that I feel like I am finally getting through. While we chat, we get to the top of a hill and look down, and I say, "It's all downhill from here, though!" I literally mean it's downhill physically, but also when it comes to my situation, it's going to be okay and get easier.

Here, the double meaning is this:
  1. When we do bad things, we end up having terrible consequences eventually.
  2. Eternity with God is going to be filled with people who are covered by Jesus. Jesus is the same as wisdom, and when we follow Jesus/wisdom we get to be in His land, Heaven!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What does the "way of the righteous" look like in your opinion?

2. What keeps you from walking the "way of the righteous?"

TRY THIS:

Wear mismatched socks today! Have a bright happy sock on your right foot and a boring sock on your left. When you look at your socks, think about walking the right way! And think about the double meaning of putting your best foot forward and also clothing yourself in right-ness!

Comments

  1. The way of the righteous is the way that Jesus’s leading takes us. He shows us how to turn the other cheek, how to give a person our coat, how to forgive a wrong done to us and how to go forward with our eyes on God!

  2. Day 12 of “Waiting on God” Ps 37:34 says, “ Wait on the Lord, and keep His way, and He shall exalt you to inherit the land.” “Wait on the Lord,” which involves worship and disposition; and “ keep His way,” which involves “walk and work” shows how closely waiting on the Lord and walking in His way are connected!
