Proverbs 1:28-33 — Think Before you Speak

READ THIS: Proverbs 1:28-33

28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, 29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord. 30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Remember, the last couple of days, we have been hearing "wisdom" speak. You may have read this passage and thought "Why does wisdom sound so harsh?" Don't worry! I also thought this reading it the first time. The passage can easily be taken the wrong way if we do not take our time with it and understand what Solomon means here.

Solomon/Wisdom is telling us that we should be wise in our decision making before we act. If we ignore God and go with our own ambitions, then we deserve all the consequences that follow. God gives us every opportunity to follow Him, but it is our choice to listen! Sadly, most people will not listen, and most will not have a happy ending in the long run. Making wise decisions is not always easy, but in this passage, we are reassured that having God at the center of our lives leads to good things in the end.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. How can you discern the difference between earthly and Godly wisdom?

2. In what area of your life do you most need God's wisdom?

TRY THIS:

Next time you are faced with a difficult choice, think about the pros and cons and how someone after God's heart would make that decision. Ask people who you trust that are spiritually wise for help... you might be surprised how much you can learn!

Comments

  1. I had an older friend named Nancy Zivley who was one of the wisest women I know. I could trust her wisdom, as she was very close to to the Lord. She knew the Scriptures and always gave me wise advice. I really miss her.
