Proverbs 1:1-7 — Time to grow with wisdom!!

READ THIS: Proverbs 1:1-7

1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;  for understanding words of insight; 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; 4 for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young — 5  let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance — 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

WELCOME TO PROVERBS!!

Proverbs is a book all about knowledge and wisdom. First, let's look at the definitions of these words. Knowledge is studying to understand the facts (or truths) about God, while wisdom is using knowledge to make decisions in life to glorify God.

God has two goals for us in Proverbs: growing our character and thinking how He would. Verses 3 and 4 talk about how we can grow in our character, but did you see the word prudence? Prudence is actions driven by truth with good intentions! Which is a part of wisdom! However, we aren't the only ones that must grow in wisdom! Verse 5 tells us even those who have wisdom must continue to grow in wisdom with the knowledge from the youth! Verse 6 is where we see knowledge come in. It is hard to have wisdom without the facts or truths of God, so it is important to be able to understand what we have read before we can apply it to everyday life!

In our daily lives we need more things than just rules, so God gives wisdom to fill in the blanks moment by moment. We want what only God can do for us, and the fear of the Lord is our pathway! It is a new beginning, and it never ends because He never gives up on us! You get to walk down this path with one requirement: letting God be God to you!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. What is something you have heard from God that you want to understand more?

2. Can you think of anyone you want to share knowledge or wisdom with?

TRY THIS:

We read that it is important for ALL age groups to grow in wisdom! I challenge you to talk to the person you thought of for question 2! But before you decide what you want to talk about, pray about it! Ask God what He wants you to learn or what to share with someone else!
