Ephesians 5:25-30 — Mulan Yourself

READ THIS: Ephesians 5:25-30

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church — 30 for we are members of his body.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Yesterday, we talked about the role of the wife in relation to Jesus and the church. In verse 25, Paul shares the example of Jesus giving his life for the Church because of how strong His love for her is. Verses 26 and 27 dive deeper into the duties a husband has for his wife. What Paul is saying is that husbands are supposed to love and fully commit themselves to their wives' success. Paul uses words like "stain," "wrinkle," and "blemish," but he is not talking about those words in a physical way. Rather, he is talking about how the Church is supposed to be holy and blameless before God. God wants us to come to Him with a clean heart, soul, and mind. It is the husband's duty to support his wife in becoming this way.

Verses 28 and 29 speak on how husbands should love their wives. Paul gives us the standard set by Jesus so that all husbands can follow them. He talks about how a man should love their wife as they love themselves. We do not abuse ourselves, so there should be no reason to abuse others. It is good to remember to love your neighbor as yourself, just like these verses show us.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Is there a way to show this kind of love before marriage?

2. How can someone love others like Christ if they do not love themselves?

TRY THIS:

Think about someone more than you think about yourself. What are their needs? What would make their lives better? It doesn't have to be huge, but it should be thoughtful. Being thoughtful and kind communicates to the other person that you value their needs above your own.
