Ephesians 2:18-22 — Christian Architecture
READ THIS: Ephesians 2:18-22
18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
In this passage, Paul focuses on each part of the Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) in a really cool way.
First, he talks about the Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us access to the Father (God). Through the Holy Spirit, we can talk to God any time we want to through prayer, and we know that God will draw near and hear us.
Then, Paul talks about God. God doesn't just let us in and have access to Him... He makes us citizens and members of His family. Citizens are representatives of wherever/whoever they belong to, so if we are citizens of heaven (check out Philippians 3:20), we should be acting like His people too!
Lastly, Paul talks about Jesus. He says that Christ is our cornerstone... but what does that even mean? Cornerstones are (quite literally) stones placed in the corner of buildings, but they have an important role. When a cornerstone is taken away, a building cannot stand the way it should, and it will ultimately fall. In the same way, Christ should be OUR cornerstone, because if we don't have Jesus, we cannot stand!
