Galatians 4:1-7 — From Servants to Heirs

READ THIS: Galatians 4:1-7

1 What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2 The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Picture this: you are the child of a powerful king! When your father dies or decides to let you rule, you will be given things like power and wealth and all of these amazing blessings... but until then, what are you? You're just a kid! You still have to follow the rules of the king and the people he appoints over you. You really aren't any different than the servants in the kingdom (if anything, they at least have the freedom to go around the place your father owns, doing their job, right?). But one day, when the time comes, you'll be given the title of "heir," and all those amazing things will be given to you.

That's what this passage is all about! Before Jesus came, we were considered slaves to sin, to our own desires, and the world. But when Jesus, God's Son, came into the world... our time arrived! Through Jesus's life, death, resurrection, and gift of the Holy Spirit, we are given the chance to be God's sons and daughters, too. When the Spirit enters into us, it calls out to God for us, and God sees us not as slaves to the world, but as His own children!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. When a king's son is given the title of heir, they are given power that they never had before. What kind of power do we get when we receive the Holy Spirit?

2. Have you ever asked for the Holy Spirit to enter in? If you are interested, but you haven't before, shoot us a comment or message us! We would love to walk alongside you through that.

TRY THIS:

Take some time to pray to God, thanking Him for being our Father! When you are done, write down three things that God does to show you He is a good, loving Father.

  1. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to tell the gospel story, WELL and with an IMPACT. We might be able to tell people all about Jesus, but we might leave out some things, or why it’s so important that these things happened, and it might interest someone but they also might walk away and never think about it again. The Holy Spirit gives us the ability to tell people EVERYTHING and have a genuine connection to the person, which will affect them more.

I can’t say I’ve ever actively tried that… weird. I’ve for sure asked god to move in me (movin’ me) so I will definitely have to start doing that in the upcoming weeks. I’m trying to get back to commenting 5:45 wake-up? Pfff easy. 😅

    1. YOU CAN DO IT YONAH! ASK SPIRIT FOR HELP! I had to do that all throughout college…be like “Jesus I can’t wake up on my own anymore haha”

      For 3 things God does:
      1) He lets me feel Him sometimes. Don’t know how else to explain that
      2) He lets me understand the Bible sometimes in new ways
      3) He made nature so cool. He didn’t need to make everything so neat or pretty or interesting and He didn’t need to give us eyes to see it all, but He did!!

  2. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to do what He calls us to do! And at the time He wants it to be done! Think about Jesus and the disciples-when did Jesus send the Spirit to them (us)-after He died. Jesus knew when He was gone that we would still had questions that He would not be there to answer, so He sent us Holy Spirit to answer the questions and give us the power to do what He asked. He did not leave us alone, but left part of Himself IN us so that we could do what He wants us to do. The job that is specifically ours to do!
