Galatians 3:6-9 — Thanks Father Abraham

READ THIS: Galatians 3:6-9

6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Paul is trying to make his point from yesterday clear by using the example of Abraham. Abraham, as written in Genesis 15:6, simply believed what God told him, and God let that count as rightness. God basically promised that Abraham in his old age would have kids, and those kids would end up being a nation. It wasn't until hundreds of years later that that nation was given the law. Yet, a lot of Jewish people thought that they could earn righteousness, like we talked about yesterday. But, if we go back to the beginning of the nation with Abraham, it was NEVER about earning righteousness. Being right with God is a gift given to us (or "credited" to us) when we simply believe God at His word. And His word to us today is that through Jesus' death and resurrection, we are made right with God.

Then Paul quotes, "All nations will be blessed through [Abraham]", which shows up several places in Genesis (12:3, 18:18, 22:18). All nations, including you and me, are blessed through Abraham because Jesus was one of Abraham's descendants AND Abraham shows us that righteousness comes through faith, not through actions or the law.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Why is it important to look back at what happened with Abraham? Why does Paul do that here?

2. Why are people who have faith called children of Abraham? How does that work with us being children of God?

TRY THIS:

Write down the word "righteousness/rightness=gift" on a small piece of paper and hide it somewhere in your room. When you find it again, remember that righteousness is something that is given to you!
