Galatians 3:21-22 — Locked Up
READ THIS: Galatians 3:21-22
21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
The law was supposed to show us right from wrong and remind us that we all fall short of perfection, but following it does NOT give us righteousness. So...does that mean people were doing something wrong when they followed the law and God was just like "haha, gotchu?" Paul says no. The law doesn't give us eternal life or anything like that because we literally are too messed up to ever do everything in the law perfectly. The whole Bible (Scripture) shows us how every human except for Jesus sinned in some way. That's what Paul means when he says Scripture has "locked up everything." Every human and group of people has been shown to be shackled by, or caught up in, sin.
Because we can see how badly people fell/fall short of following the law, we know for a FACT that we need to be saved from ourselves. We can't have faith in Jesus and what He has done for us if we don't fully believe that we need a Savior. The law shows us that we need a Savior; therefore, the law shows us that God's promise to Abraham that the nations would be blessed through him was true. A blessing is only a blessing if there's something given to us that we couldn't just take on our own. The law shows the need for the blessing/the promise! They aren't opposed to one another, or in other words, they aren't in competition with each other!
