Galatians 3:10-14 — The Curse That Breaks Curses
READ THIS: Galatians 3:10-14
10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. So the main takeaway here is similar to what we have been learning the last few days: we live by faith now, not the law, because of Jesus and His sacrifice! If we relied on the law, we would never make it, because we aren't perfect like Jesus was and is. To make this point clear, Paul actually uses verses directly from the law (the first 5 books of our Bible today) to show that the law is about action, where as faith is simply about belief.
But what's all this craziness at the end about curses? SUPER COOL CRAZINESS, that's what! In verse 13, Paul says that Christ became a curse (another word for sin and it's consequences) for us. How did that happen?
Well, in Deuteronomy 21:23, it says "anyone who is hung on a pole is under God's curse." When Jesus died, he was literally hung up on a pole... the cross. This, according to the law, placed Him "under God's curse." So, Jesus became a curse so that OUR curse (all the sin we had, have, and will have) could be taken away! Is Jesus awesome or what?!
