2 Timothy 1:6-8 — ~I AM STRONG...BECAUSE GOD IS WITH ME~

 READ THIS: 2 Timothy 1:6-8

6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

What's the "this" in "for this reason" that Paul's talking about? He's referring to yesterday where he talked about Timothy's "sincere faith." When we have a genuine faith in God, we want to follow Him, and we want to fully live into the gifts that He gives us! The most important gift is the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is the gift Paul talks about in verse 6.

Then verse 7 hits. The ESV translation writes it like this: "for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." When we are living into what God wants for us, it means knowing that there are scary things, but the part of us that is scared is not from God. We don't listen to the fear. Instead we listen to the voice that is giving us the ability to control our fear and walk in obedience to God! When Timothy though about Paul in prison, there was surely a part of him that was scared, both for Paul and for the fact that Timothy, too, could be thrown in jail. But that fear isn't from God. We can surely take it to God, and then ask for His help to act anyway! The only time we get to actually be courageous and brave is when we are scared and still act anyway!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. When is a time where you were brave?

2. What is something you are currently scared about? What would it look like to walk with God in that situation...to have power, love, and self-discipline in that situation?

TRY THIS:

Paul says to "fan into flame the gift of God" here, and 1 Thessalonians 5:19 tells us not to "quench the Spirit." So, we can let the Spirit work, or we can stop Him from working. Ask the Spirit to work in one place in your life today, asking for help to listen and obey! (Maybe in that situation from question 2!)

Comments

  1. Kinda lame but I shut myself point blank in the hand to make Jordan feel better about being shot (with gel blasters).

Something I’m constantly scared about, hmmmm. Nothing like constantly, there are some things in life that I worry about but nothing thats always a problem
