2 Timothy 1:1-2 — SECOND TIMMY TIME

READ THIS: 2 Timothy 1:1-2

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,  2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

WELCOME TO A NEW BOOK OF THE BIBLE!!!!! 2 TIMOTHY TIME LETSGOOO!!!

"But...guys...what about 1 Timothy? What is this heresy?!" Calm down. 2 Timothy is only called 2 Timothy because it is the second letter Paul wrote to Timothy that we have today. We don't need to read 1 Timothy first to understand 2 Timothy...just like we don't need to read Matthew to understand John.

Anyhow, we'll learn tomorrow about who Timothy actually is and why he's cool and how Paul knows him (sneak peek, Timothy isn't Paul's actual son). Today, it's just important to know that this letter is the last letter Paul wrote, as far as we know. He wrote this letter in a Roman prison while he was waiting to be beheaded. This information kind of gives a different perspective on the whole book and especially verses like verse 1, where Paul speaks of the promise of life in Jesus!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Do you have anyone in your life who is like a second dad or second mom to you? How would you feel if they were on death row, sending you a last letter?

2. Why do you think Paul sends Timothy grace, mercy, and peace, specifically?

TRY THIS:

Be dark with me for a second...take five minutes to write a letter saying everything you'd want to say if you were to die today. Keep that until we're done with 2 Timothy and see where you have some similar thoughts as Paul and where you have a totally different vibe.

Comments

  1. Paul probably sent grace, peace and mercy to Timothy because that is what his encounter with Jesus gave him. Just as Jesus was teaching Paul, Paul was teaching Timothy, (knowing that his life was going to end very soon) and he wanted Timothy to have that same grace, peace and mercy that Jesus had given him.
