James 5:19-20 — Come On Home

  READ THIS: James 5:19-20

19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

Sometimes people know Jesus but then kind of don't follow Him. They hear about Him, give their lives to Him, and then a month later, they are believing a whole bunch of other stuff. There's hope for that person (and hope for us if we ARE that person) because Jesus always welcomes us back. No matter how often or how far we stray, or wander away, we can still be saved from our sins and death if we come back to Jesus! That phrase "brings back" is kind of like coming home. A kid who runs away from home might run really far and stay away for a really long time, but it'd be hard to find a loving parent who wouldn't joyfully welcome his/her kid home when a neighbor brings the kid home and the kid asks to come home. And, honestly, depending on the day, we can be the one waiting for someone to come home, the one bringing the wanderer back, or the one wandering away.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Right now, are you the one wandering away OR are you waiting for someone else to know Jesus OR are you the one actively trying to bring someone home to Jesus? Are you multiple of these things?

2. Why do you think these two verses came right after all the talk on prayer?

TRY THIS:

THIS IS THE END OF JAMES!! Write down your three biggest takeaways from the WHOLE book (either in your Bible, on a note on your phone, in a notebook, in a text to someone...just mark it down in a place where you can find it again for when we finish our NEXT book together!)

Comments

  1. It’s about our actions. Saying one thing, but doing something different tells where one’s heart really is.

Be careful of what you say, and how you say it.

    Make prayer a priority.

  2. I think that these verses are right after the ones on prayer because these are things we are supposed to pray about

    My biggest take aways, hmm….
One - that even if we say we believe we have to that into action

Two - prayer needs to take priority over video games or a book (that’s not the Bible) or whatever you’re doing

Three - even though Jesus will always take us back no matter how far we stray, that doesn’t mean we throw everything he says to the side until we need him again.

Side note: In a song I love called “shade tree”, which you should listen to, it says that we think we do to him (trinity) in there (church) but we don’t think that he’s with us out here. And I think this speaks to what James says about putting faith into action, because God is always with us no matter where we go (as an older Jonah learned)
