Galatians 2:15-19 — That Building Has A Lil Sumthin'...

READ THIS: Galatians 2:15-19

15 “We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles 16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.  17 “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.  19 “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

If you remember yesterday, we talked about how Paul called out Peter for trying to force the Gentile Christians to take up Jewish practices. This next section covers Paul continuing his argument against Peter's actions, and it mentions 2 big points: being justified by faith and rebuilding what we destroy... but what do those things even mean?

Being justified by faith is a fancier way of saying that we don't earn the grace that Jesus offers us. It's a gift, freely given by Jesus to anyone who wants eternal life with Him! All we have to do is believe in Him. If eternal life was the result of our actions, then we would just brag about how much better we are than others and miss the whole point of grace (Ephesians 2:9)!

Then Paul talks about how we should be living because of that grace. He says that if we give our lives to Jesus but then we keep on sinning, we are like a person who builds a tower, destroys it (because it's bad), then builds the exact same thing again! It's kind of similar to what we learned in James 1 about looking in the mirror and forgetting what we looked like (remember... a lil sumthin'?). Grace saves us from sin, but we also need to leave sin behind us.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Do you ever feel like you have to earn the grace that Jesus offers us? What helps you remember that grace is a gift?

2. Sin can often be like a bad habit... so, what helps you get rid of a bad habit? Try and apply that to something you may be struggling with this week!

TRY THIS:

Take a couple of minutes to pray to God and thank Him for the gift of grace. Thank Him for giving us His Son so that we could experience grace as a gift rather than something we have to earn!
