Galatians 1:6-9 —Vibe Switch

READ THIS: Galatians 1:6-9

6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!
 
WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

OOP. If you read this right after the first few verses, you would REALLY feel the vibe switch that just went down. Paul goes from praising Jesus and talking about forgiveness of sins and all that to full on saying "I cannot believe you guys. We JUST spoke about Jesus and what He did, but you're ALREADY believing stuff that isn't even CLOSE to what we talked about." It's like if we just did a whole Sunday Morning lesson on how we shouldn't curse, and everyone said "Yeah, that's SO true, let's not curse," and then one minute later someone walked into the room cursing like a sailor, and everyone went, "Oh, that's cool, let's also curse!" 

Basically, Paul had explained Jesus to this church, and they loved Jesus, but they got really confused because other people (who weren't Paul) came over and explained a different gospel (a different teaching on who Jesus is and how we should respond). We'll learn more about what this different gospel was as we keep reading! 

P.S. "Gospel" literally means "good news," and people describe that good news in different ways. The most basic way is to say that it's the story of Jesus, coming to save people from their sin and invite them into a new life with Him!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Have you ever done something directly after someone told you not to do it? Why?

2. What's your guess on what the different gospel was? Why does Paul say that a different gospel "is really no gospel at all?"

 
TRY THIS:

Ask one person today what he/she thinks the gospel is. Don't say anything else in return, but in your head, see if you would describe it that way.

Luke 8:19-21 — Jesus's Fam!

R EAD THIS:  Luke 8:19-21 19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” 21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.” WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?
