James 1:5-8 — Catch This Wave...Get It?

READ THIS: James 1:5-8

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

If you've ever spent even a day at a beach, whether you're watching the waves or playing in them, you can picture how they move. I used to sit by the waves when I was younger and try to guess exactly when they'd break or crash against the ground in front of me, but I could never guess it right. Waves are tossed around and crash into each other without any sort of pattern we can understand... what a perfect description of the way it feels when we doubt God and His plan for us! God wants us to ask Him for help... but He also wants us to trust in His answers and His timing, even when they don't line up with what WE want!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Can you think of a time in your life when you felt tossed around by doubt or worry? What helped you get back on your feet?

2. What is one thing you need God's help with today? Have you asked Him for help yet?

TRY THIS:

The hardest part to me about understanding God's wisdom is that I have to sit still, listen, and wait. Try to take 5 minutes today to sit still and listen to God, even if you don't hear anything back!
