James 1:19-21 — Take note...

 READ THIS: James 1:19-21

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

If the author of something says "hey, pay attention to this part," it's usually a good sign that something important is about to be said! James says we need to specifically take note that God calls us to be good listeners who don't say the first thing on our mind and choose to hold their tongues when they are angry. Why? Because God desires for us to be righteous (doing what is right... right-ness!), and anger doesn't lead us there. So how can we learn to be better listeners and slower talkers and anger-ers??? We allow God to plant His word (the Bible) and Himself (the Holy Spirit) in us by spending time with Him and asking Him to be there!

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Of the three things listed by James (quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry), which do you feel like God has helped you grow in the most over the years?

2.  Now... you saw this coming... of those same three choices, which one do you need the most growth in today?

TRY THIS:

We love practicing this in small groups, but our challenge for you today is to try ALL day to not think of the next thing you want to say while someone is talking! Listen to them fully, wait a second, then respond!

Comments

  1. To be honest, I need to work on the anger. I tend to stuff it, so when it does come out, it sometimes has too much pressure built up behind it!

    1. Thanks so much for sharing and being honest! Something that helps us out when we are holding anger in is writing down what makes us angry and talking to Jesus about it through prayer! If you want to talk more about this, please feel free to let us know!

  2. Maybe we honor the Holy Spirit in others when we pause to fully listen.
