Hebrews 6:4-9 — Living into our Salvation

READ THIS: Hebrews 6:4-9

4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

When first reading this passage, I was confused on how anything could be stated as impossible in the Bible when God says nothing is impossible with Him. But, the key words there are "with Him." When we walk in step with God and have the Holy Spirit in us we truly can do anything God is calling us to. But in this passage, the reason that turning back to the Lord after hearing the good news and turning away is impossible is because we are trying to turn back by ourselves. When the passage says we are crucifying Jesus all over again, the way we do that is when we do not live into the salvation that He died for. He wants us to walk in freedom because He suffered on a cross for it. When we purposefully walk away from the good news, we basically are nailing Jesus to cross all over again.

That is kind of a hard pill to swallow but we can still have hope because of verse nine. We can be sure of better things because we have salvation in Jesus Christ and with His help along with the help of our Christian community around us, we can come back to Jesus.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Can you think of a time when you knew God was telling you to do something and you didn't? How did that make you feel?

2. What do you think it looks like to live into your salvation?

TRY THIS:

Stand in front of the mirror and tell yourself the good news! Try talking to yourself as if you are talking to someone who doesn't know the good news.
