Proverbs 8:6-11 — Duh-cerning

READ THIS: Proverbs 8:6-11

6 Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right. 7 My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness. 8 All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse. 9 To the discerning all of them are right; they are upright to those who have found knowledge. 10 Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, 11 for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN, ANYWAY?

In case you forgot, here we are reading Wisdom's words as she calls out for all to hear. Wisdom says that her words can be trusted and that nothing she says is evil or wicked. She then says that her words are seen as right or correct by all who are discerning, and that discerning people see wisdom as more valuable than anything the world can offer. But what does it mean to be discerning? Discerning people are people who make good judgement. People who can practice Biblical discerning often can look at difficult situations and easily know what to do!

So what does good judgement look like when we add God and wisdom into the mix? If we want to be people who discern, it starts by asking God! James 1:5 says that if anyone lacks wisdom, God is the One to go to, because He gives generously to anyone who asks of Him! If we seek God’s wisdom out and take time to actually make good judgments (rather than thinking of only what we want), we will find ourselves looking a lot more wise than foolish.

THINK ABOUT IT:

1. Have you ever actually prayed to God, asking for wisdom about something? Did He give you wisdom when you needed it?

2. Why is wisdom worth more than worldly treasures? What makes wisdom valuable?

TRY THIS:

Before you answer any question today, stop, count to 2 or 3, then answer. You may look weird doing it, but sometimes taking a few seconds to think about the right decision can help you avoid the wrong decisions that we selfishly want for ourselves.

Comments

  1. Wisdom is valuable because it comes from God. Learning can come from books but Wisdom comes from The Book (Bible), GOD’s word!
